Johhny Too Bad Today it’s one year since John died and the world lost an innovative and incredibly talented musician. Kudos to anyone who can actually work out how he plays One World with just an acoustic guitar and an Echoplex. This documentary puts him in context and shows what a character he was. Sadly missed.

Dear Marketing Manager,
15 cookies in one emailed advert? Srsly? The only way 15 cookies are acceptable is if they’re big, scrumtious, chocolate and cherry ones that melt in the mouth and have no calories. Yours are not. Do not try to feed me ridiculous e-shite. No love, Me

not enough firefly love on tumblr
browncoats: ohsusquehanna: I learned all my important life lessons from Firefly! When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up I either say “Viper pilot” or “Member of an illegal space salvage crew”. Not enough Firefly love on tumblr or at Fox. *sigh*

The social components of self-control →
psychotherapy: For the most part, self-control is seen as an individual trait, a measure of personal discipline. If you lack self-control, then it’s your own fault, a character flaw built into the brain. However, according to a new study by Michelle vanDellen, a psychologist at the University of Georgia, self-control contains a large social component; the ability to resist temptation is...

Damn you iTunes and your tempting tracks.
I am currently downloading an album that’s a total impulse buy. It features John Martyn and what clinched it was the 38 minute track of guitary noodling that’s only available if you buy the whole album. I suffer from acute minimalism FAIL

Insightful observations from Ms Marx. Sunday, January 17, 2010 Primetime television and the continuum of violence against women In this post, I will attempt to bring awareness to some of the ways women are portrayed in primetime television by mentioning a few examples of rape culture and women’s sexual availability to men from recent episodes. I am sure there are hundreds of examples,...

Debate over cognitive, traditional mental health... →
In the UK most NHS funded therapy is CBT based, because it can acheive measurable results and is provided in a standardised way. I’ve had concerns for some time about CBT being used to ‘normalise’ people who need therapy to deal with the root cause of the problem. You can treat a rash so it doesn’t itch but if you don’t discover why you have the rash and try to...

Ingrid Newkirk Is The Worst Person In The World -... →
Personally, I wouldn’t say she was the worst person in the world, given there are terrorists, rapists and murderers out there along with war criminals, serial killers, torturers etc. I do have severe reservations about any one or any group who advocate or use assault, criminal damage, vilification and a disturbingly evangelical zeal combined with a total disregard for the well-being, welfare...

Thomas theorem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia →
The Thomas theorem is a theory of sociology which was formulated by W. I. Thomas (1863–1947) in the year 1928: “ If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.[1] ” In other words, the interpretation of a situation causes the action. This interpretation is not objective. Actions are affected by subjective perceptions of situations. Whether there even is an objectively...

Just in case I’m not putting this strongly enough. What is Fundamental Attribution Error? ]]> The fundamental attribution error is a common type of cognitive bias in social psychology. THIS. THIS. THIS. Especially the bit in bold. It frustrates and angers me so much that so many people react without taking this into account because it causes so much hurt,  bad feeling and destroys relationships, friendships etc. Our View of Self and Others The way we look at ourselves plays an important role in how we see the world.  The way we see the world plays an important...

The day I decided to stop being gay - Times Online →
Speechless. Why the desperate rush to categorise as gay or straight? Why has he got to be the father with a woman? Most of all, why, when he reaches a moment of personal enlightenment does he also become so damned condemnatory? He says he was never convinced of his sexuality - so why say he was gay rather than bi? According to him, his attempt at a hetero relationship weren’t a success so...

It’s hard to know where to start with this, it oozes ‘wrong’ on so many levels. psychotherapy: As awareness of environmental concerns has grown, therapists say they are seeing a rise in bickering between couples and family members over the extent to which they should change their lives to save the planet. Kit-Kats
Apparently Japan has a wide variety of Kit-Kat flavours, many of which seem a little unusual to Western tastes.  I’m all for being adventurous with food but wasabi kit-kat is venturing into territory that my taste buds just don’t want to explore. What is it about spicy foods that has every manufacturer embracing the concept like it’s the answer to all the ills in the world?
